I couldn’t believe it when I saw Toby Carvery’s January deal on the app – a full roast dinner for just £6! Normally, prices are much higher: £16.29 on Sundays & Bank Holidays, £13.49 on Saturdays, and £11.29 Monday to Friday. But from Tuesday to Thursday in January, you can get a roast for a fraction of that. Naturally, I had to give it a try.
Arriving at the Eastbourne location on Willingdon Drive, there was a 10-minute wait despite having a booking, with queues forming for walk-ins (about 45 minutes if you hadn’t booked). Once seated, our server – a polite young lad – took our carvery and drinks order. Unlimited soft drinks were £3.99, which is decent value compared to paying £3 for a single Coke Zero in a pub.
Now to the food. The only minor downside was the queue at the carvery itself, which took around 10 minutes to reach the front. Only one person was carving the meat, which slowed things down during the busy lunch rush. The veg and sides, however, were well-managed, constantly topped up from extra pots, so everything stayed fresh.
On the meat selection, there was gammon, pork, beef, and turkey. Having had enough turkey over Christmas, I went for gammon and beef. The real highlight? The roast potatoes – both normal and beef-dripping versions – were spot on, perfectly crispy. The veg was good, the mac and cheese a nice touch, and the gravy plentiful. One plate piled high was more than enough, though you can go back for seconds if needed.
Cost of the meal: £10 including drinks. Value? Absolutely unbeatable.
Reviewer’s Score:
Food: 5/5
Service: 3/5 (server was excellent, but the carvery queue slowed things down)
Cleanliness: 5/5
Value for money: 5/5
Overall Score: 4.5/5
Reviewer’s Verdict: A decent roast, not Michelin-star quality, but for £6, it’s an absolute bargain. I’d happily go back while the deal is on.
